So your brake light switch

is functioning normally, as expected. I presume you didn't do anything to the pedal assembly so that is to be expected.
You should also confirm voltage is present at the brake light switch without the key in ignition. Now you've got power at the brake light switch, you can next check the filament monitor. It is located next to the power antenna. Ply the hard carpet open in the trunk area.
Go to the link to down load PDF version of the wiring diagram. Look at the wiring diagram for exterior lighting.
Wait. What year and model is your 9k? I know the post 94 hatchback has a flimsy rear brake light assembly. Maybe you should check that first. The light bulbs won't stay seated in the socket in some cases. Epoxy glue is needed to fasten it.
