So it's Dynamic Compression Ratio I was referring to. Street, I would think that the BMW is still set to a fairly low dynamic ratio, what with its primitive Motronic (as against Trionic) fuel injection and two valve design. These 3.5 liter sixes are said to be fairly bulletproof, and I believe it based on this car's state of tune at the moment; I presume that a lower threshold staves off detonation and generally preserves the engines.
It gives up a lot to the 2.3 turbos on the highway; passing power is nowhere near the Saab. I figured the Saab's ability to effectively raise its dynamic ratio at will is responsible for its V8-like passing ability.
