Several times in my childhood (50+ years ago) I watched my dad's uncle Ed Stodolka save things for people by managing to weld a large nut unto bolts, even ones that were broken off flush with or inside the castings on farm machines; then he would just back it on out with a wrench, since the heat would have released the bond of the bolt to the block. If it's done with the right heat and care, the weld won't stick to the casting. Ed was saving people's butts with tricks like that right up till he was 96 years old -- in his last few decades his hands normally had a bit of a shake, but as soon as he took a torch or an arc welder in his hand, he became steady as a rock again.
