I've been a Euro car guy for a long time, most of my driveing life.
I'm an ocasionaly professional mechanic, and sell salvage parts for a living the last few years.

I've done VW diesels forever, old one's(my oldest has almost 600K).
I've done older 2xx Volvo's. I've done Mercedes diesels. I've done most recently E30 BMW's, (which have been a heck of a lot of fun).

I came across a pretty low mile 86 9000 turbo 5 speed. Body is pretty good, has only 100K or so, headgasket replaced, clutch slave replaced, needs a bunch of other stuff, but it's not so bad really. The sticking points I have are a few, but they do stick.

I don't hear tales of reliablity and rock solid engenering as I always have (and experienced) with the other German makes. I do hear a lot of less than inspiring stuff about SAAB, like haveing to remove the trans to put a slave cylinder in. That strikes me as, well, really bad engenering. Something Ford would do for instance.

I'm concerned with FWD, an intercooled turbo, and a largish car. I don't mind FWD in the VW's as ther so underpowered, but the few normal powered FWD's I've driven, never really liked it.

The rear dead axle. My VW's have that, and have the icky handling traits that go along with them. I'm rather used to IRS, though maybe my VW's are bad examples to be takeing. One thing that always bugged me was turning into a parking lot semi-quickly when the bump between the road and lot would make the solid rear jump sideways. You don't get that with IRS.

Stuff like the cost of the AC compressor and a few other things, the auto climate control(ick), other odds and ends.

There are things I like a lot, size, fair power, comfort, quiet, uniqueness, hatch, good highway MPG. There are other things, and more than a little of it is I'
m bored and running out of cool old cars without getting into K-jet injected stuff. I hate K-Jet.

What's it like driving them? Will they handle as well stock as my w123 Mercedes? Are they really that much less reliable than my other cars?
I'm going to go look at it again and drive a bit more this weekend.
I'd appreciate any thoughts...
