Hi,
I just got back from vacation, and my girlfried was borrowing my '88 9K Turbo 2.0L, and said it had overheated on her. I was frustrated to hear this since I just replace the thermostat and thermoswitch, so I took a look.
It turns out when it is running, there is a drip coming from the water pump at 1-2 second intervals, and while I was gone all the fluid had leaked out. I didn't do a full diagnosis, but it appears that the drip was from the h20 pump housing gasket.
My question is if anyone could help with the best procedure for this exact year and model.
I am aware of these two writeups, but would appreciate any more insight:
http://twinsaabs.com/9000/waterpump/step1.html
http://www.duke.edu/~csf/saab/waterpump/
1. For instance, I haven't taken off an s-belt yet. Do I need to do this at the tensioner pulley with that special tool thing, or can I just do this by removing the h2o pump pulley? Those two writeups differ a little on when and how the belt should come off.
2. What else should I replace while I am doing all of this? Hoses? Belts?
3. Would it be easier to unbolt the waterpipe from the turbo and assemble the pump/gasket on the bench, or unbolt the pump and assemble it under the hood with the water pipe still attached to the turbo?
3. I just put regular old 50-50 green coolant / water in after I did the thermostat. Is this ok, or do I have to be using the sponsor's 8$ per 1.5 liter deal?
Thanks,
JoMo
