Thermostat? Coolant Temp Sensor? O2 Sensor? Ari's idea of checking the spark plugs will tell you a lot. A few other ideas that I have:
1. Is the car warming up to a reasonable temperature as indicated on the gauge, i.e. at least about 8:30? If not, the thermostat may not be closing, leading to a rich mixture (as during warm up), poor idling, bad gas milage.
2. You may want to do a couple of resistance measurements on the coolant temperature sensor, the one located between the #2 and #3 cylinders on the intake manifold - one at ambient temperature and one at engine warmed up should tell you what you need to know, can measure without removing the sensor. If this sensor is reading incorrectly, you will have the same issues as #1 above, as the ECU will decide that the engine isn't warmed up.
3. Oxygen sensor? Ari has written up numerous times how to check this sensor using an analog multimeter, do a search. Basically you are looking for the voltage on a warmed up car to swing around a central reading, 0.5V +/- 0.5V if I recall.
