Re: 1996 9000 CS Please Advise Posted by turrbo [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 1996 9000 CS Please Advise, Saabster ![]() |
Its mostly false about staying away from any Saab auto tranny. The auto tranny on the NA OG900 was a dog. The 3 gears made it painfully slow. While the ZF auto on the 9k had some reliablity issues, if it was well taken care of, it should be fine. I'm surprised that its still alive after 182k miles though. The auto trannies on the NG900's, 9-3's and 9-5s are totally bulletproof and are generally more reliable than the manuals.
Don't worry about the 182k miles on a 9000. Yes an OG900 could do over 400K without a rebuild, but so can the 9000. Most will argue that the NG900 wasn't the best Saab ever built (I agree, I have one) and I'd guess that a 9K will outlast an NG900.
As for the turbo, all 9000's (except the V6) from '95 on are turbo. This CS will be a LPT (light pressure turbo), which uses no BPC and puts out only base boost. This can be changed quite easily :)
When you test drive it, make sure the tranny shifts smoothly and see if you can look at the fluid. I'd guess that a rebuilt will be in the near future in any event. Probably at that mileage most common things will have been done already, like the heater core, blower motor, motor mounts, headgasket, etc. But you'll want to look into those thing.
At this mileage you could either be lucky and drive it for another 80,000 miles with just oil changes, or you could be unlucky and need to pour money into it to keep it running. The major components (i.e. engine) will last triple what mileage it is now, but its the little things that kill ya. It all depends on the PO and what he's done to it. See if you can get records. And of course, have it checked out by a good, knowledgable Saab mechanic.
You probably could talk the price down somewhat too, depending on cosmetic condition. Good luck! If you get a 9k, you'll never look back to your NG900!
