Okay, so a week ago, I checked the fan speed resistor, and I found that the harness connector was melted at the red/grey wire (there are four wires in total in this harness). The corresponding male end in the fan speed resistor was blackened, as well.

Taking a gamble, since I hadn't had time to run out and buy a multimeter, I bought a new fan speed resistor and installed last Thursday, first flaking away all the melted part of the harness connector. The fan worked! Responded as normal to all changes in speed settings.

Bad news: The next day, the fan died on me again. Wouldn't come on again. I was headed to the airport to fly out for the long weekend, so I've only now been able to check in on things. The result:

-- It appears the red/grey wire on the harness is still overheating things. Inside the NEW fan speed resistor, I could see the effect of the hotter wire.

-- I have not tried to jump the fan, but clearly, it worked when the new fan speed resistor was installed.

-- SO, if it's NOT the fan speed resistor, and if it's NOT the ACC (confirmed it's not that), then what, other than the blower motor, could it be?

-- I keep thinking "how could it be the fan? I just replaced it a year and a half ago?" But, like Yaofeng, I've become a real master at getting the blower motor housing in and out.

Thoughts?

Me, I'm running out to buy the multimeter Bill Homer long ago told me to purchase. Shame on me for taking the lazy way out!

Thanks for any and all help. Once I get this problem solved, replace my noisy water pump, my dislodged front main seal, and my crank position sensor (since I'm in there anyway), EVERY critical part other than the time bomb TCS throttle body, the alternator, power steering pump and fuel pump will have been done (those are all working well).
