Pond smell-
Before you start spraying stuff, have you changed the pollen filter? It's under the hood, on the right hand (passenger side, US) side of the car. Under a horizontal panel at the base of the windshield is a rectangular box seen on-end, with a top that clips on. The filter needs to be replaced fairly regularly. I go for about 20K miles, or if it starts to stink. The next thing to do is make sure the blower box doesn't have pine needles and dead leaves stuck in the bottom, blocking the drain. Make sure the drain, which comes through the firewall behind the engine, is flowing and not clogged. It may smell like a pond because you have a pond.
Alarm system - the alarm system uses the same switches as the courtesy lights, so if you saw the interior light flickering, it could be the issue. I assume this was at least 30 seconds after the car was locked (alarm is enabled 30 seconds after locking). I'd check the switches.
The '92 was still R-12. As to what the shop put in the compressor, it SHOULD have been R-12. Did they say how much they put in? R-12 is pretty pricey, so for $40 it wouldn't be much. They would have to work at putting the wrong stuff in, as R-12 and R-134 use different hose connectors just to make sure the system isn't mis-serviced. But if some unscrupulous shop decided to fill the canisters with the wrong thing, anything could happen. I would doubt that they would tell you that they put the wrong stuff in, assuming they did.
If your system had leaked down a little requiring a recharge, it would make sense that the leak didn't go away. So it is reasonable that 18 months later, you may need a recharge. But before you do that, make sure the pollen filter is clean and the drains cleared out - that can affect A/C operation. If the AC still doesn't blow cold, get the system pressure checked - you probably have leaked out some.
