Only prevents one kind of fault Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Wed, 20 Jul 2005 08:37:28 In Reply to: new device available to help stop dead batteries!!!, gavin, Tue, 19 Jul 2005 21:56:29 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This would be great for a trunk light stuck on, or you left a door ajar and the dome light stays on. As the battery voltage drops, it'll cut off that load. And if you have some other phantom load due to a failure, it'll help there, too. At least it will let you start the car. Of course, you'd better have your radio code handy.
However, if you don't have that kind of fault, it won't help at all. And frankly, most times folks chase down 'current drain when the car is off' problems, it turns out to be a bad battery. The normal drain from the alarm, clock, and radio is about 35 ma. That is less than 1/5000th of the current drain of starting the car. Even a weak car battery can source 35ma for a few days. Most dead batteries are due to weak batteries with internal discharge paths. This device won't help with that at all.
If lights stuck on have been a problem for you, then it would be of value. Otherwise, I don't think it will help with the majority of battery problems.
