Lower grade fuel = better running?

I may have posted about this before - it's really bugging me again because I ran the top grade fuel for a while and then went back to the standard stuff.

Hopefully I got this right, but in the UK we have two main grades - standard RON 95 and super RON 97-98, which I think correspond to US/Can 89 and 92 respectively.

My '97 CSE 2.3T runs so much better on the 95 fuel than the 97. It is more sprightly, idles better and has better acceleration across the whole range, and a higher peak boost, and gets more miles to the gallon by about 10%. It just isn't happy on the expensive stuff, which seems to be totally contrary to everyone else's experience.

I still feel that the car isn't running right, and that this may be an important clue as the cause. Although it's better on the lower grade fuel, it still seems to have flat spots, good days and bad days, sudden turns of speed followed by real lack of acceleration.

The fuel consumption is a hard thing to judge since it depends so much on driving style, climate, road conditions, journey lenght and type, etc, but I think generally it's not as quite good as it should be.

The plugs are new NGK, the DI is 2 years old. The lambda is a new Bosch sensor, and all the hoses are 1 year old silicone, zip tied all over. The injectors have been checked and cleaned. The thermostat is new, and I have tested the coolant temp and air intake temp sensors and as far as I can tell they are about right. I recently did the HG and visually inspected the head and bores and everything looks in shiny good condition. The timing gear has all been done recently. The fuel filter has been changed.

In the last year, I have fitted an ITG air filter, a 3" downpipe, CAT and exhaust system.

I also tried bypassing the APC solenoid with an MBC, but the effect is still the same.

It's also worth mentioning that the tailpipe is quite sooty, as were the plugs when I changed them. It always is spot on at the annual emissions checks however, but I do wonder if the CAT can hide problems here? A Saab indy told me that a certain amount of sootiness on the tail pipe was normal, but I'm not convinced.

I'd really appreciate any help here! I'm at a loss...
