Maybe wrong heat range on the plugs?

Higher octane=slower burn rate. High octane gas is recommended in modern engines so that it will better resist pinging and other bad stuff. Reason? These engines have higher compression than many older engines.
However, perhaps if your plugs aren't the right temp (too cold?) they're not lighting off the high-grade fuel as efficiently. That would definitely contribute to sootiness, etc.
I think this scenario is unlikely though. With the turbo the dynamic compression is quite high and I would think the fuel would be happy to burn even if your plugs are the wrong range. It's one thought anyway.
I learned about octane when on the BMW board, where I learned that my car's rigged for 87 octane. So actually burning premium fuel is BAD for this particular engine, with its 9.0 compression. High grade fuel won't burn completely and will leave deposits, cause hesitation, etc. Wow! My BMW's an economy car now! NOT APPLICABLE TO SAABS OF COURSE. That, and Swedish women are better looking.
