A somewhat flawed placement of the outside.....

temperature sensor. I don't know why Saab didn't change the outside temperature sensor position for the 9K in all the years of production. The 9-5s do not have the same problem, the temperature sensor is a bit better shielded from the engine bay.
I would say they all do that 8-). There is a maximum temperature for the display and I think it's about 122 deg F (it's in the owner's manual). A couple of times I was in my wife's then 1992 9K in a traffic jam on a really hot summer day inside the Lincoln Tunnel (one of NYC's main tunnel in and out of the city for those don't live in the area). I watched the outside temperature reading reached about 122, yes the coolant temperature gage was high, and the radiator fan was on high and AC was on but the car was fine.
In fact, when you turn on the AC in slow traffic, the outside temperature reading would start to rise. This happens to all the 9Ks I have driven. I attribute the apparent temperature rise to the electric fan being turned on with the AC and blowing hot air around the engine bay in addition to the heat rejected from the AC. If you are on the highway, the outside reading would be more accurate as expected.
Yes, I have to explain that to my kids it's not 122 outside.
