If they're different bulbs, that usually sets off the pictogram warning, since the system measures the difference in resistance between the two lights. If there is a difference, it will light up. Two different bulbs can have different resistances. Thats why its best to always replace the bulbs in pairs, including headlights.
There should actually always be a little click when you step on the brakes. Its the brake light switch activating, so it comes from down on the pedal. Perhaps you never noticed it before having this issue?
