Look for broken ears Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Fri, 29 Jul 2005 05:05:42 In Reply to: Re: Another belt question., borkat, Thu, 28 Jul 2005 14:20:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
There are two 'ears' on the alternator that hold it in place, top and bottom. Even if the bolts fell out, alternators tend to be stuck in there pretty good. Those ears fit into slots on the engine block. And the belt tension would hold it in place.
I have to assume that one of the alternator 'ears' broke off. That, or the bracket on the lower side has come loose, meaning two or three bolts have come out. Even then, to move, the alternator would have to shift out of the normal plane - push towards the right fender. That would have the belt severely misaligned.
But to answer the first question, no, the alternator shouldn't move. Not even a little. In fact, after the belt has been removed and bolts out, I still usually need to pry the darn thing out.
