I had fuhn with this when adding a walnut-trimmed vent the other month.
If you have an airbag, the vent isn't attached to it as it used to be attached to the glove-box. There is a metal spring clip half-way up the outer edge, and if you're lucky you should be able to pry the unit out forwards without ruining anything, if you get something like a filling knife into the joint to increase the clearance for the clip or actually press it back.
Getting it back in is more of a problem. The internal duct has to slide over the plastic tube at the back of the vent. I did this by attaching a length of masking tape to the inside surface of the duct, at the bottom, and holding this while I slid the vent back in. I later pulled the tape harder and it came free. However, I managed to nuke the spring clip so this was not a perfect solution! If all this sounds too hit-and-miss, maybe it's better to take off the dash top, so you can guide the duct into place.
With no spring clip I resorted to a thin strip of that spongy double-sided tape up the outer edge of the vent, against the dash, which worked fine.
