Could be either - start with the plugs Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 94 aero-misfire under load/boost, scott, Fri, 2 Sep 2005 07:00:44 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
That is the classic problem associated with excessive plug gap. The bigger the gap, the harder it is to make a spark under boost. I'd pull the plugs and check the gaps. Also look at the top of the plugs for burn marks - if the springs in the DI don't make good contact, that creates an extra gap.
If the plugs look good and are gapped properly, I would suspect the DI. Flip it over and remove the plastic cover (about a half-dozen to 8 torx screws). Look to see if the metal ends of the coils have burn marks, a sign that the springs aren't making good contact. Hold it up to the light to see the fluid (oil) level in each coil - it should be about 90% full. If one or more is low, it's leaking, and the DI needs replacement.
Not all DI problems are visible, so the only true test is to replace it. But before that, I'd swap in a new set of plugs. Just because they look good doesn't mean you can't have a crack or sneak path in one. Plugs are much cheaper than DIs.
