with what you're saying, there is no noticable play between the 2 wheels themselves which would logically eliminate worn tie rods, but play between the front end and the steering wheel. Without seeing/hearing more about it this would lead me to believe the worn hardware could be in the steering rack. I'm not sure how common racks fail on 9000s, I know wheel bearings go at high mileage (but you dont see much vertical play) and control arm bushings will cause nasty sounds under torque
