but you shouldn't have that kind of trouble with a Saab. The reverse gear ratio is about the same as 1st so the car should pull just as strong going backward.
I used to have a VW Scirocco and then an Acura Integra, both were manual cars and had no trouble backing up steep SFO streets.
Yes, use the emergency brakes, that's the only way to go. I learned to drive in a place where the driving test included parallel parking on a hill (both uphill AND downhill).
You need to let the clutch out with the e-brake full on, and when you feel the clutch starts to catch and the car starts to move, then slowing release the e-brakes. You may have to slip the clutch a bit more than you want to but that should give you a smooth launch backing up the hill.
