Governor seals? (long)

Alright, I adjusted the kickdown to where it should be (previous owner had it wayyy too short) and tranny shifted perfectly, right on cue, no harshness, etc. But today, driving back out to school (every weekend 9hrs round-trip) after about 2 or 3 hours, the transmission started not downshifting, like it has no kickdown. I can shift it manually and it shifts fine, feels like there's a little bit of a delay, but not bad. At one point I tried accelerating after someone just turned off in front of me, and I pulled the selector to 3rd, (however the tranny was in probably.. 2nd, since I was almost to a complete stop) and it made it up to 3rd, then all of a sudden, TCS CTRL, limp mode, etc. Pull over, shut it off, restart, no problem. But still with the wierd no kickdown. Am I looking at a bad KDW motor? Or possibly worn governor seals? I don't know how old the transmission fluid is, do you think maybe a triple change along with filter might help? Oh, car is a '93 9k 2.3T. Any help appreciated!
