There have been more frequent failures of manual transmissions even with stock power, after 1993 or so, for some reason. Can't say whether extra power's the culprit, or whether something in the redesign of these transmissions around that time left them somewhat less durable than their prior counterparts.

Automatics are a gamble of course, in any year, with any power, but then again in both manuals and automatics there are plenty of trouble-free owners out there too. Just something to think about.

By the way, I base this comment on having seen more regular postings here regarding transmission problems. No "official" data to back me up but if in doubt you might do a search on it. Seems various internal washers and snaprings have a way of letting go.
