John -
I have the full JT 3" system. I have had it installed for 3+ years now. Did it myself, and was actually quite easy to do. So far, so good. No rust-through, leaks, or defects. I live in CT where salt is heavily used in the winter.
The biggest performance gains are had from the turbo to and including the cat. Any mods to the exhaust system after that produce negligible gains. There are people who have only installed a 3" dp and 3" cat, then used an adapter to hook them up to the oem 2.25" stock exhaust. These people have been quite happy with the results, and probably are experiencing the same power increase I got from a complete upgrade.
I do not know anything about the benefits of SS over aluminized steel, other than SS will probably last longer.
I was the ringleader for the last group-buy purchase of JT exhaust systems, re-mapped ECU's, and upgraded air delivery systems. This was all done with Engstrom, a site sponsor, about 3+ years ago. It involved about 35 JT's, 6 ECU's, and a few air systems. It was time-consuming, and I used my own personal email address for correspondence as this board is not a forum for placing orders. If you would like some info on doing this, send me an email by clicking on my name above.
Definitely look into an upgraded exhaust system. I think 3" is the way to go, since stock is already at 2.25". Anything bigger will produce negative results, and may not fit too nicely under the body.
