Funny you should mention this problem.

I'm having the same type of sound, and although it appears to eminate from the front of the car, it's actually coming from the bottom right-side of the engine.

While replacing the serp belt the other day, I was able to put my head close enough to the engine on that side since the wheel liner was off, and what I'm hearing might be a loose timing chain (ugh!). I spun all of the different pulleys and none of them made that sound, nor were any of them loose (I did this while the belt was removed).

The sound appears whenever I lightly touch the gas or at idle. Once it gets above approx. 2K rpm's, the sound disappears. It's like a loud growl and can be heard from outside the car as well. It started about 3 months ago.

It's definitely not control arm bushings or anything related to the suspension. It's also not the exhaust system. I can hear it coming from inside the timing chain cover area when I was able to get close to it from down below.

See if yours is coming from this same area. I'm hoping it's not what I'm thinking because that's a chore to replace!!!
