This all sounds very similar to what my '97 CS 5-speed is doing. My description would be more 'unmerciful rattle' than 'growling', but I suspect it could be the same thing. It started about 2,000 miles or less ago, and only happened when the left front corner of the car was loaded (braking + turning right). Then it started to happen with either or both braking + turning right, next whenever driving on rough roads, now it happens most of the time. The suspension is pretty new (sportchassi kit with 30,000 miles) and the sway bar bushings, butterfly bushings & tie rod ends were done at the same time. One change just before the noise started was I installed a poly upper motor mount (just one poly & one rubber). I wondered if replacing this mount put extra pressure on a lower mount or on the transmission mount? I thought the noise was from in front of the driver (transmission mount), but my wife thought it was from in front of the passenger side. I can find nothing wrong with any of the suspension. The transmission mount looks ok, so that leaves me thinking it's an engine mount. (I haven't been able to get the car on a lift to have a good look at it.) I'm planning to have my Indy look at it next week, because I don't have don't want to mis-diagnose, and waste hours replacing stuff on a trial + error basis. I will post here what I find.
On the topic of engine mounts, does anybody have any experience with the solid motor mounts eeuro sells? They are 1/2 the price of the hydrailic ones... are they better, worse or the same? I vaguely recall somebody posting that the solid ones create more vibration than the hydraulic, which does make sense.
