When you said you had the engine apart I assumed you had removed the head and were looking down at your nice pistons. If so, then it's not much more work to get the timing cover off.
If you do, you might as well have a good look at the balance shaft sprocket while you're in there, and I'd put a chain in since it's inexpensive.
You will need to remove the timing cover to get the balance chain done, and although you can "roll in" a timing chain with new master link, I've never done it and would advise pulling the timing cover to do that job as well. In the end I suspect it would be easier, especially if you've got the engine apart already.
If you don't have the head off, removing the timing cover can kill the head gasket, which means you'll then have to remove the head. So this might be a time for the roll-in procedure. However, if you've not got any definitive signs of NEEDING a timing chain, there's no reason to do it. They're not especially known for failing in your model year. I'd worry more about a botched roll-in failing than the original timing chain failing.
If you're going to do the endless chain replacement entailing removal of the timing cover, then it's worth addressing the balance shaft drive at the same time.
