Just completed head gasket replacement on my `96cseTurbo ,I have 141k on her and gasket was showing signs of failure for some time now ie;mist of oil spewing out rear of motor with oily buildup below head gasket area.Had oily antifreeze upon drainage but oil was good looking.I guess this head gasket failure is normal due to aluminum head and steel block expansion rate differences.Timming chain replacement is only indicated by worn camshaft sprokets. If you look at the sprokets and they are not in a nice symetrical pyramid shape then they and chain should be replaced.I personally did not remove the timming cover because it is not necessary to do head and sprockets looked good. But did do everything else while in there ie;serp belt, waterpump, hoses and you should do O2 sensor while access to wiring is accessable.Buy the 60.00 universal bosch with 12 inch pigtail and connector which you can splice in after snipping the existing the wires off the current one and leave all the excess wiring near the front under the compressor so next time you can access it easily. The two white wires are not inter changable so get someone with experience to assist.I had an indie do mine right before the head gasket situation. You might as well replace your head gasket while your in there. But yes you can spin the crank without cams moving, without damaging valves becaue pistons are dished and would not touch valves anyway because they don`t in normal operation.Make sure you spin the crank two complete revolutions to bring # 1 piston up and you can check by looking through spark plug hole.Anyway you are probably finished with whatever you were going to do by now anyway but I just got my car finished last night and am happy to have her back.
