You want the compressor to be active during the winter. Without it you'll be fogging up all the time. The compressor removes the moisture from the cabin. If it doesn't all that moisture will wind up on your windows. Right now not as much (unless its raining out there like it is in Boston) but definitely in the winter when you have snowy boots and jackets and stuff.
