Universal sensors good if spliced properly Posted by Bill Homer [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Are universal sensors just as good?, TML ![]() ![]() |
From what I know, Bosch only makes a few different types of oxygen sensors (1-wire, 3-wire, 4-wire) and attaches different cables/plugs to them for wildly different amounts of money, especially if they become OEM parts. On my Audi A4 V6, I recently replaced the two front oxygen sensors with some Bosch sensors designed to fit a 1992 Ford Mustang 5.0L V8; these are available at Autozone for $36.95 each (and come with a $10 rebate too!), a bit less than the Audi OEM price of about $230 each. I used a variation of the procedure in the link below.
As the wires in the harness are stainless steel, chances are you will have a rough time soldering the connections and they may fall apart - it's not the same as soldeing copper wires. I have a lot of soldering experience, yet I used crimp connectors, if that's any indication on how strongly I feel about this. One note, you have to be very careful about the crimp connections too, use a good crimp tool, pull-test them before you seal things up with heat shrink wrap.
