I do mine the same way. Here's how. This is a post from Michael Smith, a guy in Vancouver who used to post here:

Adjust the interior rear view mirror to maximize your view of the
rear through the rear window, this usually means you can just barely see
your own ear in the edge of the mirror but depends on each particular car.
Next lean your head over to the driver's side window and adjust the exterior door mirror so that you can just see the side of the car in the near edge of the mirror. Then lean over the center of the car, over the gear shift knob is usually the center, and adjust the passenger side door mirror in the same
way so that the side of the car is just barely visible in the nearside edge
of the mirror. When seated normally you will not see any of the car in the
mirrors and neither will you see the same piece of road in any two mirrors,
except well behind the car.

This minimizes any blind spots and eliminates 98% of all shoulder checking.
You should realize that shoulder checking which is routinely taught in North America is in fact extremely dangerous in that you must remove your gaze from the front of the car!

Now, each car requires a little fine tuning of mirror position to achieve
maximum coverage but you start with the above process then fine tune very
slightly for optimum coverage.

If you use convex mirrors this method still works but you will see more in
the convex mirror. I prefer concave mirrors as they give you a wide distance field of view just smaller image, convex gives you a more fish eye view which is wider in the near view but distorted.

Of course, the Japanese method of putting the mirrors on the front fenders
(wings) is an even better system than the Euriopean/American door mirror
system.

Be warned that the SAE method cannot eliminate the need to shoulder check
for bicycles or motorcycles so alert monitoring of your mirrors is essential
to ensure you properly inventory these possible vehicles and shoulder check
accordingly. No, you don't need to always shoulder check just because it is
possible there is a cycle, you should either see the upcoming motorcycle
long before you need to shoulder check or have just passed the bicycle.
Thinking is still as important as observing, while driving.

The other more important problem to remember is on entrance ramps or lane
changes with very slight curvature the driver's side mirror may not give
full coverage of the adjoining lane so shoulder checking is necessary in
those limited circumstances. Actually, it is more of a toss of the head to
see beside you as most of what you need to see is in the mirrors there is
just a slight blind spot right next to the rear fender on slight curves.
