the right mindset. Mechanical inclination, some tools, and a garage are the only things you really need. I am not a mechanic, and since I have bought my 9KT I have done all the brakes, the heater core and blower motor, all the mounts except for the tranny mount, a new valve cover gasket, and routine maintenance and little things that needed doing. The mounts do require lifting the engine, but you can do that with a $20 Walmart trolley jack, like I did. It took the better part of the day, but it is a great feeling when you are done (and showered up). The parts for all the mounts were 140 bucks (eEuroparts.com), plus another 20 for a 19mm deep socket, and a wrench that I needed (17mm). When I had my clutch done (I wasn't about to attempt that) the shop said they would do my mounts for $650, so I saved 500 bucks right there. There are great DIY resources here, on the web, and in the Haynes manual that can show you how to do things. Check out Quasimotors.com for a good write up on how to do the mounts. If you set aside a few days, you could probably bang out all of the work if you worked for 8 hours a day. Good luck.
