I wouldn't worry too much about the lack of side airbags in a 9k. I was forced off the road on the NYS thruway driving my 88 9kt (no airbags) on New Years Day 2002 and hit a guardrail at 65+mph. The car was pretty trashed on the driver's side from the impact, but I got out and walked away without a scratch. Had I been in a vehicle with plastic or fiberglass body panels I might have been a lot worse off.
Basically, I wouldn't be concerned about how safe your 9k is...I'm on #3 right now and one has already allowed me to escape a bad accident without a scratch.
