I would see the boost gauge get very quickly from vacuum to 0psi, then very very slowly climb. If I kept my foot to the floor long enough, it would hit 10psi. Basically the turbo was just spinning like crazy in order to slowly overcome the loss of pressure due to the leak.
To find the leak, I blocked off the hose at the turbo end, and at the throttle body end. I hooked up an air compressor to one end, and supplied a constant 10psi. I could hear the air gushing out near the delivery side header of the intercooler.
I posted a list of required materials for the pressure testing a day or two ago.
