Recently on my '97 CSE (115K), I've been getting a new sound just after starting. The starter engages just fine, the car starts, and the starter disengages. About 2-3 seconds after the starter disengages, I hear a sound like gears hitting sheet metal, for about 1-2 seconds. Then all is fine. I know it isn't the harmonic balancer (reference marks are good), and the sound seems to be coming from the starter - under the intake manifold. Nothing visually seems wrong, but the weather isn't such that I'm ready to rip the manifold off to inspect more closely. It was intermittent, only occuring every 20 or 30 starts, but now it's getting much more frequent. I don't hear anything driving around, so I doubt the starter is loose.
I'm wondering if the starter clutch is messing up on disegagement. The sound occurs a couple of seconds after the engine catches - I wonder if the engine drives the starter for a bit, and as it pulls back, I'm hearing the starter gear grinding on the flywheel.
Thoughts?
