Ok,
I just can't figure this one... I've been trying for weeks.
Standing next to the engine with the hood open, the engine sounds fine, idles smooth. I notice a little slippage/belt noise occasionally in the serp belt when the AC first kicks on, when cold, but that's it,and it's always done that (even with newish belt - might have a little power steering fluid residue on belt after i had major leak onto it and cleaned with water).
No timing chain noise to be concerned about, pretty quiet.
No exhaust noise that I can discern.
No ticking.
Inside the car, it's a different story, the engine isn't quiet while idling, there's a pronounced sound in frequency with the RPMs that gets hard to notice when above 1500-2000 rpms.
Ddd-ddd-ddd-ddd-ddd-ddd-ddd
Kind of like a motorcycle, maybe, or helicopter, but subdued and quiet.
A deep noise, as opposed to a high tick.
Sort of sounds like a 60s V8 with a lumpy idle, only less lump, the sound is closer together in frequency.
When I had the head gasket done, the guys told me the old gasket had slightly scored the cylinder wall and the engine might sound different, but it didn't, it sounded fine, and they said overtime the noise would disappear, NOT APPEAR, so I doubt that's it.
Is there something in the tranny that can make this noise, inner driver...
The noise development is concurrent with the development of increased idle vibration, that I thought might be winter gas, or feared would be head gasket.
Car runs strong. Any noise that could be related to mystery loss of oil I just experienced the other day (1 quart in short amount of time).
Any thoughts??
