as a squeal. If your tensioner is working properly, the transition from no load to load on the AC, alternator, etc. will be noticeable but shouldn't cause any slippage or anything like that. You should just notice the click of the compressor clutch, whir of the second cooling fan and a momentary drop in RPM. Any belt slipping, skipping, means your tensioner isn't responding well to the load.
A shredded belt is a good indication that one of your pulleys is out of alignment with the others. To me it sounds like your tensioner, but you can't tell without examining. Take the belt off and spin the pulleys by hand. You will be able to feel if there is any slop or bad bearing. They should be smooth. Next look over the pulleys from the front of the car with a flashlight. It should be pretty clear if one of them is out of alignment a bit.
I can't describe the details of the tensioner makeup because I had a shop replace mine when I was having my cracked timing chain cover replaced. I only saw the broken down one. It had literally fallen apart when it was removed from the engine.
Best Regards,
David
