Relieving cooling system pressure / Boyle's Law?

After every day's drive, I have taken to putting a rag on top of the hot expansion tank and slowly loosening the cap to relieve the pressure. I think this was one suggestion mentioned previously. It seems to reduce the few drops of coolant overnight from the false bulkhead drain. Until I can look into possible leaks at the heater core hose connections.
I hope this trick will not have any unintended/harmful consequences.
I wonder why there is higher than atmospheric pressure in a hot cooling system. There is mostly liquid in there, not much gas except for the air in the expansion tank, right. Boyle's Law (PV/T = constant) applies only to gas, right. Or is it the result of Boyle's Law on the small amount of air at the top of the tank?
