When you had the valve clatter, was it constant, whether at idle or running at speed? Just wondering because I have a Merkur that was severely neglected in the oil change department, 15k miles on regular dino oil, and sludged up.
It wouldn't make noise at idle, but when running at higher rpms, the valve clatter would develop, possibly from oil starvation from a clogged pickup that can't deliver the goods.
It's been on the back burner, and I was going to drop the pan to see what it looks like, but maybe the compressed air through the filter and flush might be a possible fix. Sounds like it'd be worth a try-
What did you use to deliver the compressed air, just a blow nozzle with pressure regulated to some lower value?
