Not a crazy idea,But i would not do it.There are deposits that need to be removed are also else where in your motor.I would add a 1 quart can of 'Gunk Motor Flush to your present engine oil and drive the car easy for a day or two (no high rpm's or loads).Then drain the oil and chage the filter,install new oil but use 1 quart of "Rislone" oil product to the oil fill instead of one quart of oil fill and run the car normally for the the next few oil changes doing the same procedure and you will clean up the engine over time.Then when the timing/balance chains need to be done,the pan comes off latter,and all will be cleaned.
