Could you top this?
It is the sump pan of my 94cde when I did the auto to 5 speed conversion. I had it coming because I picked the car up on Ebay sight unseen (very cheap, of course). It later gave me a lot of grief, most of it my own screw up, so I won't get into that.
I am one who enjoy getting his hands dirty so I won't do what you are planning to do. I'll just open it up. If I have to, I'd use mineral oil and let it sit for some time if getting rid of gunk in the sump pan is what I intend to do without taking it apart. I'd even stick an air hose down the filler tube to blow compressed air once in a while with the mineral oil in the sump to stir things up a little. I'd even do this when I am draining the mineral oil from the sump hoping to flush most of the gunk out guicker. Remember the pickup tube sits very low on the pan so if you just let it drain by gravity the debris tends to stay under the screen.
