Some of you followed my saga on this 94cde I converted to 5 speed. There was a lot of sludge inside the engine when I opened it first. Right after the conversion I started AutoRx treatment. 2,500 miles later I follwed instructions to change oil and started the rinse cycle.

4,000 miles following the conversion persistent oil light developed. It was due to my own mistake installing the oil pump cover snap ring the wrong way as I later found out. The snap ring came off after 4,000 miles. So the oil pump could not develop sufficient pressure. Oil starvation caused one of the balance shafts to seize (intake side). It took out the balance shaft chain. Amazingly the engine starts and the car runs (with the oil light on of course). But the broken chain scoured a hole on the oil suction passage at the bottom of the timing cover. So no oil or very little of it is being pumped after the hole is created.

During the Thanksgiving holiday I took the engine apart and supposedly fixed everything using a pair of balance shafts, balance chain sprocket and balance chain I saved from another 9k engine. The hole on the timing cover was patched by JB weld. After I put together the engine it ran with a flickering oil light. At running speed it the oil light went off. The light comes on at below 1,000 rpm.

I replaced the engine oil pressure sensor. The filckering light remained.

Right before X'mas the car briefly stranded my son 20 miles from home. He was able to restart it and came home. I immediately started taking it apart in the garage before leaving for vacation. There are metal shavings in the oil pan. The front bearing cap on the inlet balance shaft was giving way. The hole on the timing cover I JB welded held.

I figured during vacation I could get a used engine for $700 locally worst case scenario.

Came back from vacation on New Years's eve. I started working on the engine on New Year day. The front bearing cap on the intake balance shaft wobbled. The rear was scoured a little. I applied high temperature sealant on both surfaces and shoved the intake balance shaft in and locked it. I removed the balance shaft chain and the balance shaft chain tensioner. I also threaded the oil hole for the tensioner and put a screw on it to seal it. I got rid of the balance shaft chain wanting to spend as little as possible on the car not sure of a solution.

After I put together the engine and lowered it, the car still run with a flickering oil light.

So what did I do wrong? Talked to Eeuroparts 10 minutes ago. The oil pressure relieve valve (the small aluminum cylinder) costs fifty some dollars. The spring costs 11 dollars. Neither is a stock item and they take more than a week for delivery. They are my next guess for things to replace but I saw no unusual signs or wear on them when I remove them last.

Or should I just run it to the ground and go for the $700 engine replacement solution. My time is free as usual.
