I'm the proud owner of a 98 9000 CSE with 104K on the clock. It is in really good shape, and it came with a folder full of records from the previous owner. It looks like he took it to his local Saab dealer for most of the maintenance.

The car didn't come with floor mats, and I didn't notice the damp carpet in both the driver's and passenger footwell until after I got it home. The carpet is slightly damp, and slightly blue tinged. Obviously something is/was leaking...I've used some old towels to soak up/blot up the stuff as I drive around. It's not that much...if you press with your hand some will come off, but it's not like a full sponge gushing out of the carpet.

So, my dilemma is trying to figure out if the heater core is leaking (and if it has previously been repaired or not.) I could not find a heater core repair from the records provided to me, but that doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't fixed.

Other than the slightly damp carpet, there doesn't seem to be any other signs: 1) no sweet smell 2) heat works great 3) windows not fogged up and are not greasy, etc.

So - what are my options? I'm going to put some Bars Leaks in tomorrow to see what happens, and then clean up the carpets as much as I can. I will also keep an eye on the coolant level in the overflow bottle. I guess by keeping an eye on the coolant level I can determine if indeed my heater core is leaking (another obvious sign is more coolant leaking on the carpet)

There is a possibility that the previous owner already fixed it...and just never cleaned up the carpet properly (I admit this is probably slim)...and that's why my car which seemed to be meticulously maintained inside and out has no floor mats. Maybe the dealer I bought it from just tossed them out as they were ruined and just left it at that.

So, other than trying Bars Leaks and watching the coolant level...any other ideas before I bring it in to a mechanic for service? (Another post even mentioned that a pressure test on the cooling system would not be able to tell if the core is leaking - is the only way to tell by taking it out and testing it?)

Thanks for any help/ideas you can provide.
