True, it's not a critical system, but bolts loaded in single shear are generally a bad thing. I have not looked at this area except for the pictures in this posting, so I may not be seeing the problem properly.

It is probably better to overtorque than undertorque. I don't mean blapping it with a big impact wrench, but going to 20 or 25 ft-lbs probably wouldn't hurt. (M8 is 16 ft-lbs, right?)

Threads all the way probably wouldn't help much. Ideally, the threads should stop within the first collar. In this case I guess it would be the tensioner shock.

Going to a 10.9 grade bolt probably wouldn't be ideal either, as higher grade fasteners tend to be harder and more brittle. You could up the torque on it without worries, however, so it's not a bad idea.

Probably the best idea would be to get a new bolt when you change the tensioner or pulleys. Check the yellow pages for 'fasteners'. There is an excellent store near me, I imagine most areas have something similar. Google is your friend.

An excellent source for info on this and many other related subjects is the book "Carroll Smith's Nuts, Bolts, Fasteners and Plumbing Handbook". ISBN 1-87938-406-9. There are other books by him too. He was the head mechanic for Ford's GT-40 efforts in the 1960s, so he has some cred, in my view. He deals with shiny pretty race cars, but the mindset and the engineering knowledge are directly applicable to our plight.
