95+ (I think) has diff. gauge setup than previous years

Whereas the gauge in a 94 and earlier dash is, as it were, "direct" to your temp sensor in the head, in 95+ cars the sensor sends its information to the trionic brain, and the brain then interprets that signal and sends a signal to the gauge.
The ECU is also responsible for turning on and off the radiator fan.
In between, it attempts to compensate for various factors like exterior air temp, engine load, etc., so that what you see as "normal" doesn't necessarily represent a certain coolant temperature.
The idea was supposedly to level out the gauge and eliminate the fluctuations that old-style gauges could exhibit. Or maybe that was secondary, and the real reason was to eliminate the radiator thermoswitch, which we all know can kick the bucket and fail to switch on the radiator fan.
What I'm trying to determine is if I'm seeing a normal deviation for a 98, based on others' experience.
One past poster notes that when his upper hose blew, the gauge persisted in a "normal" reading. I'm developing a hunch the coolant temp sensor is up to no good. The upper radiator hose was plenty warm after the drive home.
