I have a 5 spd in my '96 CSE and an auto in my '95 CS that my daughter drives. The auto works fine at 142K and has had it's fluid changed only a few times. We know the PO (who otherwise was religious about maintenance) who drove the car moderately and had no trans issues.
Excpet for missing the poke of my CSE I really like driving the auto trans car. If the tranny on the '98 you're looking at shifts OK, I wouldn't think twice about buying it if the car is otherwise in nice shape. Just have the fluid changed 3X when you get it so you have a starting point, then do it at every other oil change (this swaps about 1/3 of the fluid each time). You'll be fine.
