I've just used a tank and a half of gas on my 98 CSE turbo auto and the first tank averaged about 16.5 MPG, mostly around town. (This was with faulty BPC, and underinflated/leaking tires, and many quick starts and stops to "test" the turbo and acceleration hehehee.)
I'm on my second tank now, with 93 octane, a new BPC, and new tires. On a recent 200 mile highway trip, I was averaging about 27.5 at 55-60 MPH...so I know the potential is there for 28 or 29 out of my car.
I'd love to get to at least 30 highway MPG from my 9000. My Volvo 850 (non-turbo) 5-cylinder gets about 32 MPG on the highway when staying at 55-60 MPH.
I have no idea what type of motor oil is in the engine right now, but plan to switch to synhetic when the weather is warmer. I might play around with a 0 or 5w-30 vs. 0 or 5w-40 to see what yields better MPG on the highway (I know the xw-30 will probably give me a little more MPG at the expense of increased engine wear, etc.)
Also plan to try airing the tires up a bit to 38 PSI or maybe 40 PSI for highway use.
I couldn't convince the wife to go with a manual tranny, so I know I'm at a 1-2 MPG disadvantage vs. stick shift cars.
