Actually, if the head gasket was replaced or the timing chain was removed for any other reason, it is easy get the chain off by one tooth on the intake valve. (A familiar refrain on this board is: "Ask me how I know.") It can be checked by removing the valve cover and manually moving the crank until it is at top dead center (TDC). On your year, I think the marks are visible on the flywheel. On 1994's and later the marks are on the harmonic balancer. Once at TDC, there are marks on the timing chain sprockets and on the camshafts that can be checked. Being one tooth off is not enough to cause problems with valve interference, but it gives more overlap of the intake and exhaust causing it to idle like a 1960's muscle car.
Fixing the problem involves releasing the chain tensioner and repostioning the chain on the intake sprocket.
