I think you are looking at about $1000-$1500 in parts for a car that has 160K miles on it. There is no way you could do a decent job for $500.
bearings allone will cost you $150, if it spun a rod bearing the rods will need to be reconditioned and ideally rebalanced. You will want to replace all the timing and balance chains, as well as the guides, and sprockets. that will be ~$250, the Gaskets, oil seals, LockTite/sealers will cost you $130. If it is a 5sp you should do the clutch at the same time which will be ~$300. Then what about the head, valve guides etc, that will be ~$500. Then there is pistons/rings $400 min. then there will be machine work, ~$200, new cylinder head bolts ~$40, not to mention the additional tools that you will end up buying.
I think the above comes to about $1900 just for parts if you really want to "rebuild" the engine.
