axle changes thru the years. Help!

This is not a fun night. My 1993 9000 CSE turbo 5 speed is apparently a bit of a mutt. It bought it a couple yrs ago after a hard life, but it had a replaced engine & trans in its recent history. That is apparently bringing home some pain tonight.
Short story... the CV joint went out, got a rebuilt axle shaft. it had wrong number of teeth for ABS, they said they gave me on for a 900, not 9000. Anyway, tonight with supposedly the correct shaft in hand, after greasing up the tripod cup I go to stuff in the axle shaft and it won't go in. The three spinner bearings are about .1 inch larger diameter than the slots in the inner driver cups on the tranny. Just for fun, not that I've had enough yet, I stuffed in an old 900 axle and the tripod fits perfectly. Great idea, remove the tripod from the 900 axle, stick it on the 'new' 9000 axle and proceed. Except the shafts are different diameters.
Now I'm wondering if the genius that replaced the tranny on this car might have used, say, one from an early 9000, one that had smaller inner driver bearings. Or maybe a tranny from a non-turbo.
Anyway, I'm both kinda stuck, and very curious about differences in axles & transmissions thru the vintage I'm concerned with.
Does anyone know what size changes occurred thru the years (say pre-1995) in 9000 transmissions and axles & inner driver joints.
Thanks.
