This was much more than I expected. Apparently when my mutt had another tranny put in it, (I assume) they used a non-turbo tranny which of course had the smaller diameter tripod bearing cups. Thusly, the rebuilt half-shaft I bought wouldn't go into the cups. The three bearings were too large. Returning to the store, fortunately they still had my turned-in core. (this is the first time I've done an exchange like that and turned in the core when buying the part. Not a good idea. It's always nice to have the old parts around.)
Anyway, I removed the tripod from the old shaft and installed it on the new shaft. But that was problematic. Then old tripod (ie the non-turbo one) needed splines about .1 inch longer than the new shaft had. I ended up using my air-powered die grinder to pare back the shoulder on the end of the shaft by the splines so I could get the tripod pressed on enough so the snap ring would fit.
Voila, one running car, and a simple 2 hour job turned into 2 extra trips to the parts store, a few extra hours figuring it all out and grinding new parts. Really a lot of fun. Hope this saves someone a little time.
