The later trannies were a bit taller in their gears.
Here's What I've got for transmission final drive ratios:
All normally aspirated (NA) cars: 4.45:1
up to '92 Turbo cars: 4.05:1
'93 and later Turbos (incl. Aero): 3.61:1
Sounds like you got a different tranny. I don't know if you could open it up and replace a gear for the final drive, or if you'd need a whole different one. My guess is that the marginal improvement in off-the-line speed will be offset by reduced gas mileage and the need to shift out of first way too quickly. Like someone said, first gear will seem useless.
